Currently representing the Melbourne music scene, Liam Turner is blending up the musical genres of rock, jazz, and more into his own signature sound that we truly cannot get enough of. Born out of lockdown, “Face the Music” explores “disillusionment and failed expectations through jazz chords and an airy timbre”. Liam is serving up a style of his own and making a name for himself in the process.

Our first thoughts and impressions on “Face the Music” were just how perfectly laid back it was. The chilled out atmosphere that this song is oozing is one that’s hard to be done without seeming like you’re going for it too hard. While that may not make too much sense, it’s as if the inspirations that came through for this song had been marinating for the perfect amount of time. Really though, we would describe it as giving us lounge type vibes, something we’d want to kick back to and play on repeat.

Between the varied instrumentation on this track, Liam has managed to incorporate the best parts of both rock and jazz. The jazz came through in the feel of the song right from the beginning and didn’t let go until the very end. As impressed as we were overall by how the song actually sounded, we were equally if not more impressed by the way that the artist’s voice softly carried us through the song. While it wasn’t quite at the forefront of the mix, it certainly played a powerful role in making the song what it was.

Instrumentally though is where it took us by hold and piqued our interest. As mentioned, it gave off a lounge around feeling, something that you’d want on while hanging out with friends or on a solemn drive through the countryside. The way that the instruments perfectly intertwined and interacted with each other and the solo towards the end that tied it all together were what won us over.

Considering that “Face the Music” appears to only be the third officially released song in Liam Turner’s discography, we’d have to confidently say that we think it’s his best to date. So much so that we’re hoping we can either get more singles or a full album from the artist (hopefully) by the end of the year. An album full of relaxed songs like these would make for a record that we wouldn’t be able to turn off. With summer fast approaching, at least in the US, an album of Liam Turner tracks to play through the sunny ideas would be more than ideal.

It should go without saying at this point, but we really did quickly fall in love with this song, and we honestly think you will too. It’s everything we look for in what we consider to be a laid back jam, so go ahead and stream away! Enjoy!
