Just in case you're not familiar with Laurel Taylor’s work in the CCM community, the artist has finally made her return to her roots with this single, “Old House”. Immediately she sets the tone with a calming atmosphere, leading the charge on a vocal forward performance. This one sent chills down our collective spines, and with that, it's exactly why we are recommending everyone to listen to the song as soon as possible.
For the fans out there of Miranda Lambert, it certainly stands close in comparison to that sound, however Laurel still has gone above and beyond in creating a special niche for herself. For the most part the instrumentation serves as a nice background and setting builder, but honestly, the real love and passion is coming directly from her vocals. From line to line, Laurel does an excellent job of painting a picture and taking the listener on a very personal journey and experience. The background of this song has to do with an “inspiring story of escaping the past and providing a future for herself”. Truly, we feel that the best way to get over the past is to lay it all out on the line like she’s done here in a vulnerable fashion.
Although this song absolutely takes characteristics from the country genre in its sound and tone, in a way we confidently felt that it transcended genre as a whole. It’s a straightforward singer songwriter piece that happens to have that infusion looming in the background, but it’s really the core of the song that comes from its message and introspection. The production is crisp and clean, its stature is grand and expansive, but it’s legitimately difficult to get over the range that Laurel holds. It’s not often something comes our way and the emotion is this immense, especially when it has collectively welling up towards the final notes. Don’t think twice, get into this one as quickly as you can to feel all the love it exudes.
