Kirk Thurmond brings the soul on infectious new single, Strangers
Review by Austin Sher
Kirk Thurmond has returned with a fantastic and very retro new track, titled “Strangers”. Released very recently on May 22nd, 2020, this groovy song featuring, NYC artist AC Lincoln is guaranteed to get you up and dancing by the end of it.
As the song begins, you almost feel as if you’re in a rocketship taking off, which is definitely a good thing in this case. Next, follows an enchanting bassline that hooks you right into what’s about to happen. Kirk’s smooth voice enters the mix, singing “we will never be lovers”, and from then, a catchy guitar riffs comes screaming in. There’s right and wrong ways to a start a classic track, and this is for sure one of the better ways you can do so.
By now, your head should be rocking and you should be singing along. The song displays complexities in instrumentation, but also has a very familiar feel to it. I get flashes of early Michael Jackson, which is not a stretch of the imagination in this case. I think it’s a very fitting comparison given similarities in both artists music.
Let’s not forget to give credit to New York’s AC Lincoln on this track though. Kirk Thurmond’s solo quickly turns into a duet when Lincoln joins the mix and there’s nothing but good vibes all around as soon as he enters. All throughout the song are ear pleasing moments such as the way they bounce lyrics off of each other and smooth guitar that keeps me hooked throughout.
My first impressions of the track overall are that I know for a fact I’ll be giving multiple listens to it once again. It immediately went on all of my summer playlists, as it should yours, and I sent it to my parents who I also think would enjoy it greatly. It’s a song for everyone and it’s a song that is lighthearted, even though the lyrics can be a little dark at times. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, even Thurmond himself mentions that, ““As people, we buy into this idea that pretending like something never happened is an effective way to move on. This song is meant to stop that person, and that process, dead in their track”. The man knows what he’s talking about and he tells it like it is.
