Kate Ellis crafts stunning single "Scars" off upcoming 2nd LP

Born in Louisiana and bringing those roots now to her home base in London, Kate Ellis has just let loose a preview of her upcoming record Spirals, called “Scars”. If this song is any indication of the greatness that her sophomore album is going to hold, then consider us wildly excited for what’s to come. What is being described as a “dysfunctional love song”, the lyricism here is as strong as every other facet of the track.
At just a tad over three minutes in runtime, Kate spares not a single moment getting the listener thrown into the deep end of her messages. Infusing that classic country twang, but with a modern twist due to her silky smooth vocal delivery, there’s a certain nostalgic feeling that rings throughout the song. With southern country-folk roots coming from her father, it almost feels like an homage in the best way possible.
While it felt like we could single handedly pick out a hundred things we enjoyed about “Scars”, what really stood out for us was the empowerment and the passion that came through from Kate. You can feel the great time she’s having delivering those lines, but being backed up by some inventive instrumentation also brings a much needed life to the track. Things are generally lighthearted in the style and tone, however the themes of the song still allude to a seriousness.
As mentioned, she’s got a second album on the way slated for release any day now, but “Scars” has given us the confidence to say she’s got something super special on the way.
