For those somehow out of the loop on Iris Marlowe, she’s a Chicago-based artist specializing in a special blend of country and rock music. With her new album coming out just a few weeks after this review drops, we’ve sincerely enjoyed everything leading up to the big day. “Shed Your Skin” is the newest release, and although we loved “Make Up Your Mind”, this one has gone above and beyond in terms of suspense and mastering the slow build.
Comparing to her past singles, “Shed Your Skin” holds this dark edge about it that only makes sense once you give it a proper listen. From what we understand, this specific single was inspired by “cutting ties with toxic people to become your full potential”. It all comes together when you connect the dots within the lyrics, but throughout the listen our focus kept getting shifted to everything going on in the background. We mentioned there was an air of suspense right from the opening notes, almost as if there was an invisible drama happening in our ears. That sounds wild, we know, but eventually “Shed Your Skin” explodes out of nowhere and the instrumentation kicks into high gear. As mesmerizing as everything was leading up to that point, the constant throughout the song is Iris’ voice that seems unfazed by everything going on around her.
Clearly influenced by spaghetti westerns and leaning more on the classic country side of things, the singles leading up to the album release have been extremely diverse in both sound and style. It’s got our interest piqued as to what the full experience is going to be like once it’s all out, but there’s no doubt in our minds it’s going to be flawless from start to finish. We can confidently add “Shed Your Skin” onto Iris’ growing pile of amazing pieces of art, with so much more to be added on once 5/26 rolls around the corner.
