Review by Austin Sher

Ahead of his new EP, Sports, Huddyglo is back with the release of his two fantastic music videos for “Trip On My Tongue” and “Be My Sequencer”. Read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the music, as well as a bit of background on the artist himself.

Huddyglo, also known as Hudson Glover, has been crafting sonic explorations since he started recording with GarageBand and his Casio keyboard in middle school. Hundreds of eccentric song doodles inspired by disco/synthpop/noise began to pile up secretly in his harddrive which soon prompted him to start playing live in the local DIY music scene at venues like the legendary Che Café in San Diego. Often too melodic for punk kids and too weird for traditional venues, his musical endeavors were redirected inward and he continued to record in solitude throughout college in the secluded and dreamy atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest’s redwood forests. During this time, Hudson began to hoard vintage electronics, tape machines, old synths/organs, and exotic instruments that would later become useful in his work.

In recent days, his interest in vocal pop music has resurfaced and he has started making music influenced by Stereolab, Ween, and Arthur Russell. Starting in 2017, Hudson created the moniker ‘Huddyglo’ to specifically focus on his psychedelic pop releases. Since then, he’s released a full length album that goes by the title of Innocent & High On Love, which we highly recommend you give a listen to as well.

Now that we’ve familiarized ourselves a bit with the background of where Huddyglo’s been, it’s time to dig into the music and videos! Our first impressions here were, wow we are not nearly high enough to comprehend what’s going on here, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. It’s not everyday we get sent work so out there, most of it stays in the lane of mainstream. So when we finished our viewing of both music videos, it was honestly quite refreshing to know that “weird” still exists. In fact, it’s overly welcomed. In a world where people are far too serious for their own good, it’s very nice to sit back and get a glimpse into someone who operates differently.

The hardest part of this review is trying to determine which song and video we liked best. Although there doesn’t need to be a definitive answer, I think multiple viewings of each would eventually reveal that both are unique and special in their own way. Seeing as Huddyglo prides himself on the use of non-conventional instruments, it was fun to try and attempt to pick out what was what. While we’re no experts on the subject, the artist clearly has the knowledge and skill to operate whatever was going on in the background.

Listen up, now’s the time to get weird with it and experience something outside of your traditional comfort zone. Watch both and be your own judge, but make sure to give the artist feedback while you’re at it. If you like what you heard though, get excited because Huddyglo's EP Sports is all set to release on August 28th, 2020. We won’t lie, we’re excited to see what’s going to pop up on the record. With that being said, stop what you’re doing and get watching!
