One of our favorite solo artists of the past decade, Jay Watson, has just returned with another extraordinary single called “Race To The Air” released under his moniker, GUM. In the works for quite some time now, it’s six delicious minutes of his signature sound, yet he’s pushed the boundaries of what we previously thought capable. Please enjoy our full review of the track below, as well as a much needed insight on it as well.

With a sparkling blend of cosmic disco, pulsating grooves, and ethereal effects, GUM takes listeners on a celestial journey that is both captivating and otherworldly. The track opens like a massive interplanetary spacecraft, immediately enveloping the listener in its mesmerizing atmosphere. The robo grooves and quivering moments create a sense of anticipation and excitement, as if preparing for a thrilling voyage through the cosmos. GUM's meticulous attention to detail is evident in every sonic element, with each layer adding to the overall cosmic soundscape.

In discussing the origins of "Race to the Air," GUM shares a fascinating anecdote about his experience at Glastonbury. He vividly recalls running from a portaloo to the stage while The Cure started their set with the iconic "Plainsong." This personal memory inspired the song, originally titled "Running to The Cure." However, considering the association with the COVID-19 pandemic, GUM wisely changed the name to "Race to the Air" to avoid any misinterpretation.

The infectious energy of "Race to the Air" is sure to captivate audiences as GUM prepares to take his talents overseas for a series of live performances in the United States. Fans can look forward to catching him in cities like NYC, LA, DC, and Chicago in October. With tickets going on sale soon, anticipation is building for these highly anticipated shows.

GUM's recent collaboration with Ambrose Kenny-Smith of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on "Minor Setback" and "Old Transistor Radio" further showcases his versatility and creativity. These tracks, released for Record Store Day, have received extensive airplay and garnered praise from tastemakers worldwide. GUM's ability to seamlessly navigate different musical styles and collaborate with other talented musicians only solidifies his position as a respected figure in the music industry.

With "Race to the Air," GUM continues to push boundaries and deliver innovative music that transports listeners to another dimension. His dedication to his craft and undeniable talent shine through in every meticulously crafted note. As fans eagerly await the release of his forthcoming solo collection, GUM's latest single serves as a tantalizing taste of the sonic journey that lies ahead.
