Representing the Myrtle Beach music scene, Grant Nesmith is expertly blending the genres of psych, surf rock, with elements of Americana as well. Starting young and being influenced by The Beatles, his personal musical evolution took him from playing in bands, to then embarking on a solo career of his own. His 2020 debut Between Tides was great, but this is something truly special.

Blending some of his old roots of country, yet bringing a new feel to things in the present day, Dreams of the Coast is a forward thinking record that doesn’t rely on cheap tricks and thrills, but the true artform of relatable lyricism. After starting the recording process in 2020, he enlisted quite the team to help out on the instrumentation, mainly North Myrtle Beach native Sadler Vaden (Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit) on lead guitar, alongside Gene Elders (George Strait, Lyle Lovett) on fiddle.

While the album leans to be more of a collaboration compared to his previous releases, it still very much has the cohesive sound that you’d expect from Grant. At a total of 10 wonderfully produced tracks, there’s certainly not a moment of filler throughout the entire listen. Every song is thoughtful, doesn’t evoke feelings of feeling rushed, and have so many elements of the “feel good” feeling we all need in our lives so badly.

One of our favorite parts of the record as a whole is how effortlessly it blends all the genres mentioned above. In their own right, each genre could have an own album of its own stemming from single tracks created on the record. In this case though, Grant manages to explore different sounds through the delivery in his vocals, but also while he allows his backing band to take liberties throughout the songs. However he managed to pull it off, we can only imagine a ton of forethought went into the whole process.

If it’s not completely clear by now, it should go without saying that we’re highly recommending and suggesting you give Dreams of the Coast a thorough listen from start to finish. It’s about as cohesive as it gets, so make sure to give it your undivided attention.
