Feeling Less Alone in Love in Moses Sumney’s “grӕ”

Album Review by Sarah Woods

Moses Sumney is widely known as one of those young and attractive Los Angeles-based singer-songwriters that is lusted after by men and women alike all over the world. With a strong social media presence and a sense of fashion that even Miranda Priestly would appreciate, it’s no wonder that all eyes were on the rising star when the release of the first half of “grӕ,” his sophomore album, was announced in February 2020, with his single ‘Virile’ already making waves in the indie music community.

Shortly before the first half of “grӕ” was released only a few weeks later, Moses made another announcement of a month-long string of free grӕ Residency shows at the historic Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles for the month of February to experience his second album live for the first time, but also to visualize his music on a new level with an interactive art installation available for viewing before and after his set. With so many live events, releases of singles, and the first half of the album building hype for the complete album back in February, the anticipation has been building for months. Thankfully, last Friday marked the release of the full “grӕ” album on streaming services with a complete vinyl package ready for order as well, including handwritten lyrics, original photography, and 2 booklets.

The wait to experience the complete sophomore album has proven to be worth the while. With each track now in its proper place, you’re pulled into Moses’ world from start to finish. While it seems like Moses is still trying to find the answer to the questions he posed in ‘Doomed’, “Am I vital / If my heart is idle? / Am I doomed?”, the artist seems to have accepted that even loving someone and eventually losing them is still worth the experience, as sung about beautifully in ‘Bless Me.’ Moses even goes as far in the album to discuss the complex nature of platonic friendships that can easily turn romantic if all parties are willing in ‘In Bloom’:

“Sometimes I want to kiss my friends / You don’t want that do ya? / You just want someone to listen to ya / Who ain’t tryna screw ya / I swear I want that too yeah / I just want someone to listen to me / Who ain’t tryna do me.”

Moses’ “grae” ebbs and flows like the ocean, and it is certainly one that can bring peace to anyone’s life during this anxiety-stricken reality we are facing currently. With 20 tracks total, it’s a journey worth taking to ultimately not only learn more about Moses Sumney, but also about yourself in the process. You can stream the album now on all streaming services or purchase the full album through Moses Sumney’s official online store.
