Relaxing, relatively stripped back, and full of compelling lyricism, we’re absolutely loving this all new record from Frank Rabeyrolles titled Boat Songs. Keep reading for our in-depth review of the album, as well as a background on the artist.

Currently based out of Montpellier, France, Frank Rabeyrolles has simply outdone himself on his seventh full length album, Boat Songs. While the record certainly takes on many iterations sound wise, it’s a cosmic blend of Indie Pop, Lofi, and Folk that utilizes the artist’s DIY touch, ultimately giving off an extremely intimate and wholesome listening experience. We’ve truly enjoyed our listen and are urging everyone out there to kick back and hit the play button here whenever possible.

Released via his own record label, Wool Recordings, Boat Songs comes in at 10 songs that span right around 34 minutes in length. From the opening notes on, what Frank has done effortlessly is curate a highly specific vibe that sort of gives off a nostalgic feeling of early 2000’s indie records. While there’s no doubt in our minds that he’s carved out something that feels very personal to him, you can’t help but wonder as a listener where exactly these songs spurred from lyrically. The fact that the instrumentals don’t get too crazy, your focus is seemingly always on the words which we prefer. Though we’ve only gone through this a couple times, it’s more than piqued our interest to the point where we’ll be coming back to attempt to match the puzzle pieces of his experiences and learn a little bit more about him as a person.

From a production standpoint, that was another constant winning moment for us, mainly because so many of these songs rely on the expansive nature of the soundscapes and having you as a listener drift off, for example on the song “Post of post”. That song is definitely one of the ones that sets the tone, vibe, and aura of Boat Songs. There’s many others that feel a bit brighter and exuberant, but the sort of emotional and introspective ones are easily the tracks we culminated with the most. As a singer and songwriter, Frank really did impress us in so many different ways, to the point where undoubtedly we’re going to explore the rest of his sneakily massive discography. There’s six other albums to uncover and we’ll be looking forward to it!
