Written in July 2020, but released on December 30th, 2020, Fil Ricchiardi has made his return with another outstanding new single, “Hourglass”. We’re loving it! Please read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the track, as well as a refresher on the artist.

You may remember, but we covered Fil’s last single, “1E3miles” back in August. Thankfully the Italy born and now Canada based singer and songwriter is back with another wonderful representation of his unique style of indie pop music. Directly influenced by artist such as Jeremy Zucker, Jon Bellion, and blackbear, the sounds certainly show, but he still manages to impart his own flavor into the mix.

Specifically on “Hourglass”, Fil gave us a much needed background on the track, in which he said, “The lyrics describe the night before the other person’s flight. Both of them knew that they most likely wouldn’t ever see each other again. At this point the artist knows that there is nothing he can do to change the situation and says ‘I don’t wanna be sad…’ but rather enjoy these last moments with this person.”

Clearly the meaning of the song has had an impact on the artist, which is why he’s most likely spent so much of this past year perfecting it. Honestly though, we’re thrilled he did, because it turned out to be an outstanding song that is filled with passion, emotion, and glimmers of heartache. We always say that the test of a true musician is if they can make the listener feel like they’re in on the situation. In this case, Fil has made us feel like we’re a part of his life, but also part of the beauty that is “Hourglass”.

Speaking on the instrumentation, the artist has chosen more of a minimalistic approach which we feel was the right path to take considering the emphasis lies in the lyricism. The song could have been filled up with a cavalcade of synthesizers, big drums, and more, but instead it’s stripped down to mainly just soulful vocals and guitar. Anything more could have taken away from the message and distracted the listener from the story that’s being told.

Like we mentioned last time we covered the artist, we were really looking forward to listening and seeing what his next move would be. With the release of “Hourglass”, it truly is everything we could have wanted in the evolution of his overall sound. We’re in a new year now, so we do hope that more is on the horizon in terms of new singles, EP’s, and maybe even an album. No rush to the artist, we’ll be happy with this for the time being.

With all this being said though, we are confidently recommending and suggesting you take the time out of your day to give it a listen. Make sure to check out his past works as well, they’re equally as great.
