Review by Austin Sher

Officially releasing to the world on December 11th, 2020, Eddie Cohn has released the first single off his forthcoming album Dystopian Days, titled “Freedom”. Please read along with us for our thoughts on the track, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

For those who may be unaware, Eddie Cohn is part of an artist collective featuring musicians Bruce Watson (Guitars & Bass), Jake Reed (Drums & Percussion), Dan Lutz (Bass), Phil Peterson (Cello), and Kevin Penner (Mixer & Masterer). On his own though Eddie seriously does it all, including being at the helm of vocals, piano, synthesizers, drum programming, bass, and percussion. One of the first things you’ll notice on his track, “Freedom”, is it is very drums and bass forward, in the absolute best way possible.

As far as musical influences go in Eddie’s overall sound, you’ll be able to hear glimmers of Pearl Jam, Radiohead and Peter Gabriel. According to the artist, “I am always striving to fuse elements of Rock, Grunge and Tribal beats”. While some of these genres unmask themselves on “Freedom”, we actively feel that this is a sound of its own that the artists have managed to successfully piece together. Just a tip from us, when listening for the first time, we highly recommend listening on a nice pair of headphones for the ultimate effect.

In addition to the song being fantastic, Eddie and company also put together a visually stunning music video for the track as well (linked below). As much as the drums and bass will flow through you on first listen, the video itself gives it that extra effect that truly takes it to the next level. It’s extremely well shot and brings life to what you’d envision while listening.

While Dystopian Days isn’t set for release until 2021, it’s instantly become clear to us that we’ll be keeping a close eye on its inevitable release. Until then though, you can stream “Freedom” on Bandcamp prior to its release!
