Downfall unleashes extraordinary EP, "What If This Is All Real"
Following up his first record since 2019, Downfall is back with an unbelievably impressive and hard hitting EP titled What If This Is All Real. We are loving it! Please read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the record, as well as a background on the project.
Believe it or not, Downfall is a one man project brought to you by Carlos Williams. Playing all of the instruments, writing, recording, and providing some seriously heavy vocals, this artist has floored us with this newest output. At just 24 years old, Downfall is currently based out of Leeton NSW Australia and has been playing and creating music most of his life. What If This Is All Real 100% needs to be your next listen.
Working as a rice and sheep farmer and using music as a hobby, we can think of no better way to spend your free time. Additionally he just mixed, mastered, and produced a wonderful EP called Clarity from one of our new favorite artists, Brooke Casey! We interviewed her not too long ago and it’s a great thing we did, because that’s how Downfall came into our lives. Brooke even features on Track 3, “Living On The Edge”, which was easily one of our favorites.
At 6 total songs, spanning just about 25 minutes, there truly is not a single lull or dull point in the entirety of this listen. It’s certainly a bit of a heavier sound throughout, but the context and deep lyricism within the record is what pulled us in the most. According to the artist, “the themes of the EP are to do with depression, self judgement, loneliness, friendships and relationships. These themes all build up throughout the songs towards the closing title track. This is something I think about when things go wrong in my life; why would any of these things matter if nothing is even real? It almost touches on simulation theory in a way as a means to explain how life might not actually exist”. We recommend making your own connections, but it’s always a plus when we get a background from the artist themselves.
As fantastic as all of the songs were, there’s just no possible way we could pick out a singular favorite. What we will say is that we hope you make sure to remind yourself that everything you hear is coming from one person. There were legitimately an immense amount of standouts and moments for us, but throughout the entirety of the listen we couldn’t get over how perfect the vocals were. Nicely timed screams, the ideal amount of conviction, and just a really great representation of the genre as a whole. Anyone who enjoys rock music in any capacity needs to listen to this EP as soon as possible.
For all new fans out there, and we have a feeling there will definitely be a lot incoming, we recommend listening to some of Downfall’s past EP’s as well. They’re all fantastic and really showcase the growth this artist has experienced over the years. Lastly, we’ve included all the important links below in order to follow and listen, enjoy!
