Doris' debut album, Storm Doris, is a stunningly crafted piece of art that will transport you to a dreamy world of ethereal melodies and atmospheric shoegaze soundscapes. Recorded in a bunker, this London-based band has managed to create a fresh sound that combines the best of shoegaze and dream pop, however in a way that still effortlessly infuses their own personalities and charm. It’s both a band and an album we recommend, so please don’t miss it.
From the very first track, "Down", it's clear that this is a band with a vision. The opening guitar riffs, combined with the lush vocals, immediately draw you in, and the song builds into a mesmerizing soundscape that feels like a storm brewing. Throughout the album, Doris showcases their ability to create expansive, melodic tones that ebb and flow, creating a sense of movement and progression. For us at least, both “Supernatural Sex Dream” and “Lonely Rose” were standout moments, with their driving beats and soaring vocals. The layers of guitar and synth build into a crescendo that eventually rids the anxiety, making the listener feel like they’ve finally topped the mountain.
But it's not just the soundscapes that make Storm Doris such a captivating album. The lyrics are poetic and evocative, consistently adding layer of emotional depth to the sound. As wonderful as the instrumentals they’ve created, it’s certainly worth a second or third listen just to pay close attention and attempt to connect the dots on their messaging.
The album ends with "Under The Sun" a slow-burning track that perfectly encapsulates the natural beauty of Doris' sound. The atmospheric guitars and haunting vocals create a sense of longing and yearning, and the song builds to a climax that leaves you breathless. Through seven minutes of twists, turns, and undeniable artistry, it’s our crown jewel of the album.
