Making a statement on her fun, vibrant, and upbeat debut single, we’re loving everything about Debra Leigh’s latest, “Heart Shaped Face”. Keep reading for an in-depth look into the song, in addition to a background on this talented artist.

Led with a peppy acoustic guitar and Debra Leigh’s enthusiastic yet expressive vocals, we can confidently claim she nailed it on her debut single, “Heart Shaped Face”. For this UK-based singer and songwriter, she’s done the difficult job of grabbing everyone’s attention through relatable lyricism that processes her feelings but in a way that truly feels sincere and genuine all at the same time. Without a doubt, we’re urging everyone out there to give this song a listen as soon as you can.

Diving right into it, ultimately “Heart Shaped Face” is exploring the “complex relationship between Mother and Daughter” as this was written shortly after she left for University. It takes a look at a life change and how “empty nest” syndrome might be dealt with in the near future. For so many parents out there or those who experience this sudden loss, there’s absolutely no doubt that this song can be a piece of art to confide in and make yourself feel a little less alone in the situation.

Putting the message aside for just a moment though, the actual instrumentation and song structure here really does hold such fun qualities about it. According to Debra, the pop genre hasn’t really ever been a major influence for her as a songwriter, but felt ““it just seemed right for this”. In our opinion, we can’t really imagine hearing it in any other way, especially because it displays those complex emotions so wonderfully within her delivery. It borders the line of including some pop punk elements on the backing beat, is undoubtedly catchy in every sense of the word, and legitimately feels like one of those songs you’d learn the words to just to sing along to join in on the fun.

For a debut single, you really can’t ask for much more in terms of creating something so well rounded and lyrically poignant. Our hope now is that we see a lot more coming from Debra Leigh, potentially even a continuation of these feelings and how her and her husband continue to cope. In the meantime though, we’ve included the link below so that you can all get listening!
