Released right at the tail end of 2022, Dad Junior has continued to reinvent and push his sound forward. Do yourselves a huge favor and read on for our full review of his record Clones (Are People Too), as well as an update on this talented musician.

We’ve been covering the work of Dad Junior extensively over the past couple of years and consistently he wows us with his progressions, hypnotizing style, and breadth of creativity. On the artist’s 8th full length record Clones (Are People Too), he’s leaned into the bassier side of things, all the while keeping the sound as dreamy and expansive as ever. Normally we’d urge you to start from the beginning of his catalog, but this is too good to gloss over.

When you’re about to embark on a Dad Junior record, there’s a few things you can usually expect. His signature feel has embodied chill beats, melodic piano, and an overwhelming feeling of calm and relaxation. There’s always some experimental samples tastefully included too, but where we felt this album shined the brightest was on its groovy end and that’s 100% attributed to the bass factor. Considering he’s been learning it over the past two years, it’s another weapon in his vast arsenal of tools that’s made his music pop. At just 8 total songs that run around 16 minutes, dare we say our only complaint is we wish it were double the length. We’ve certainly mentioned that in the past, so apologies on our behalf for being selfish and needing more of this specific style.

Said by the artist himself, he recommends listeners enjoy this while relaxing, reading, or driving, and we can confidently back that up. While there’s definitely stand out instrumental moments amongst the bunch like on “Stay Awhile” or “Vibin’”, he’s once again created a vibe that’s best enjoyed uninterrupted from beginning to end. It’s not long either, so a full listen shouldn’t be too complicated, literally because it sucks you in from the start. The combination of all these instruments pinging off each other in harmony scratches your brain in the most pleasing way possible. We consistently enjoy Dad Junior’s music in our off time for moments of bliss and this is just another piece of beauty to add to the rotation.
