Courtney Jacobs releases her synth-poppy new single, "Canary"
Review by Austin Sher
Courtney Jacobs has just delivered a wonderful new synth-pop track, titled “Canary”. Read along with us as we break down our review of this great new song, as well as a bit of background into the artist, including her paired fundraiser with the ACLU.
At just 21 years old, Courtney Jacobs is already making waves within the music industry. Her laid back synth-pop songs are exactly what we were looking for in our next featured artist and paired with her dreamy vocals, “Canary” is already a winner in our eyes. According to Jacobs, “She insists that there are at least two sides to every story and every song; avoiding ‘poor me’ songs about heartbreak, she focuses on the complex, uncomfortable space between victim and perpetrator. That space is directly explored on “Canary” and it definitely takes a bit of courage to admit.
While Jacobs is a part of Charlottesville, VA’s Silver Retriever, of which she is the lead singer, this specific solo work is really speaking to us. If you’re digging “Canary”, Jacobs has already promised more singles to be released this year, and we’re already looking forward to whatever she’s cooking up!
Onto the music though, we fell in love with this track from the first listen. The spacey, wavey, synth-pop opening is something we didn’t expect, but ultimately grew to appreciate quite a bit. The minimalistic use of electric bass and keyboards were such a perfect complement to Courtney Jacob’s wide vocal range. Overall, it’s a super chill and laid back track, but the lyrics are really what needs focus on them. As we mentioned above, Jacobs really opened herself up to the world speaking about difficult subjects. Considering music is an outlet for so many, I feel that artists use the atmosphere of the song to really get the message across, and that’s something special to behold.
Overall, we really loved what we heard, and we think you will too! To listen, to keep up with everything Courtney Jacobs, and to follow along for all future releases, please check out the following links below.
