Review by Austin Sher

Released ahead of his upcoming debut album, Brown Recluse, Colin Woltmann has officially shared two singles, “I Can’t Breathe” and “Lady Justice”, both wonderfully written and performed. Read along with us for our review of the tracks, in addition to a background on artist.

After teaching himself how to play guitar after a friend took his life in high school, writing and performing quickly became the best way for Colin to express himself and process all the good and the bad life has to offer. He bought an 8-track and started recording some of his songs while attending college at the University of Minnesota. He eventually worked up the courage to play some small places and started putting together what he had hoped would become his first album.

Due to coronavirus, Colin unfortunately had to close his business, but it has now allowed him to solely focus on the release of his album, which is due out early next year. You should be able to tell for yourselves solely through the lyricism and themes in the song, but the songs speak directly to the tragedies happening in America today regarding George Floyd and our entire system as a whole. Sometimes there is truly no better way to voice your personal feelings and frustrations than by putting it into song.

What Colin has accomplished on both singles is nothing short of spectacular, in fact, we were truly moved after listening closely to both. The wording that was chosen, the serious vocal delivery, and overall arrangement made for two fantastic singles that are sure to be a wonderful precursor to an album full of songs just like these.

In addition, the artist let us know he took more of a “lofi” approach with the production. Considering music gear is so exorbitantly expensive these days, we think he did a fantastic job with the choices he made. If anything, the sound is a lot more raw, real, and emotional with just the vocals and acoustics. He pulled it off incredibly well for what he has, but in seriousness, not all production needs to be top tier quality in order to get important messages and music across to an audience.

With this all being said, we’re highly recommending and encouraging all to listen to both singles, you surely will not be disappointed. For all things Colin Woltmann, to listen, and to keep up with news on his impending album release, please check out the following links below.
