Carey Clayton debuts his lush new single, "Vultures"
Review by Austin Sher
Los Angeles’ own, Carey Clayton, has crafted yet another fantastic single, titled “Vultures” We absolutely love what we heard, so please read along as we review the track, as well as provide a bit of background on the artist and how you can keep up with his next move.
After spending an “intense period” of time in New York, Carey Clayton has returned to Los Angeles to continue on with his blossom music career. Citing his direct influences as Radiohead, Bon Iver, and Bibio, we knew from the start that we were in for a fantastic new track. While we definitely plan on telling you our thoughts on the song, we think it would be best if Clayton gave a little bit of background as well. Clayton let us know, “Written as a stream of conscious response to the big unknown in the world right now, “Vultures” explores the mental dangers faced with confronting such uncertainty. Taking it day by day, and finding something positive to hold on to are the coping mechanisms. Instead of a repeating, lyrical chorus, this song is composed with an evolving instrumental refrain descending much like vultures circling carrion. Thoughts of doubt, fear, and anxiety act as vultures preying on our decaying spirit if we don’t take care of our mental well being”.
We couldn’t have possibly said it better ourselves. There’s so much unknown and uncertainties, the only way we can all make it through is by taking it day by day. Thankfully there’s plenty of new releases of music to keep us at bay, and we’re truly happy “Vultures” made its way to us when it did.
Now to speak on the music, wow, just wow. I personally think the flute is the most underutilized and underappreciated instrument in music, so I was immediately thrilled to hear it being included right off the bat. We definitely got Bon Iver feels from this track. The looming piano in the back, the subtle drums creeping, and Clayton’s wide vocal range really made the song flourish in ways we weren’t expecting. “Vultures” immediately went to all of our mood-based playlists and will be a regular listen for years to come!
We hope you’ll enjoy “Vultures” as much as we did. In the meantime, it’s time to stop reading and start listening. For everything Carey Clayton, to follow along with his future releases, and to listen, please check out the following links below.
