Impressing once again and staying incredibly consistent in his releases, Ben Somers has just delivered a wonderful new EP titled Dysfunction. Please read on for an in-depth review on the record, as well as a background on this talented artist.

For those out of the loop, Ben Somers is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer who’s just come forth with a riveting new record he’s called Dysfunction. With help from collaborators Rob Updegraff & Wesley Gibbens, the three have put together a collection of four intriguing tracks that feature pure instrumentals, thoughtful lyricism, and an immersive experience for all who dive in. We’ve been listening nonstop since it got sent our way and have a feeling you’ll all feel the same once you give it a spin.

Spanning multiple genres ranging from Jazz to Folk and everywhere in between, Dysfunction comes in at just a tad over 20 minutes and holds the listener’s attention from the opening note. With a fully instrumental song called “For Dennis” as the opener, it served as a perfect taste of what was to come. Throughout the listen though, there’s plenty of lyrical passages that are worth the effort to make connections on, however this is clearly a listen that focuses heavily on sound and atmosphere. Considering Ben is so proficient in an endless amount of instruments, don’t be surprised when you hear something new coming through your headphones every minute or so.

Though the EP is extremely cohesive and 100% worthy of an uninterrupted listening experience from start to finish, we were particularly fond of just how well it flowed in its energy. The first two tracks had more of a relaxing and calm feel that allows for the listener to focus 100% of their attention, but “Dysfunctional Family Bend” stuck out in the best way among the bunch. It’s something you could get up to dance to and ultimately felt like the climax of the record as “Wall Critter” brought it back down again. For anyone across the music spectrum who’s looking to expand their horizons and enjoy something a little more mature, we truly can’t think of a better EP to dip your toes in. It can’t be said enough just how rich the sound is here, but you’ll have to give a listen for yourselves to really find out.

With all that being said, we’re overwhelmingly recommending you check out the links below to listen, follow along, and of course to keep up with much more coming from Ben Somers. Enjoy!
