Spanning their discography and reinventing themselves on a lovely “new” album titled The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads, Beach Fossils have completely blown us away with their latest. Please read on for our full analysis of the record, in addition to a refresher on one of our favorite groups.

Growing out of the band’s love for artists like Lester Young, Bill Evans, and more, Beach Fossils have always enjoyed the sound of ballads. While there’s already a slight element of jazz within their music, this reinvention of their sound on The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads is the band showing the world exactly what they’re made of. If you’ve liked their music in the past, you’re going to fall even more in love with them on this album.

For those out of the loop here, Beach Fossils have essentially taken their greatest hits and recomposed in the jazz style. What the record features are tracks like “This Year”, “Down The Line”, “May 1st”, and so many more that have become even more emphatic and memorable than before. The record was recorded remotely over this past year and it just goes to show you how much technology has advanced, because you’d never be able to tell the difference.

Now while Beach Fossil’s lead singer’s vocals aren’t necessarily built for jazz-style vocals, we particularly think that the slowed down nature of it at all turned out amazing. With the addition of some subtle horns, laidback piano grooves, and other instrumental flairs added, they’ve breathed a new life into our discography that can’t be matched. We’ve been longtime fans of the band for quite some time, but now we’ve found the ultimate record to wake up with, have playing in the background at parties, or to just generally kick back and forget about the world for a little while. For that, we thank Beach Fossils and everyone involved for this record, it means so much.

While of course we’re going to recommend everyone listen to this album whether they’ve heard of the band or not, our real hope is that they’ve also been working on some originals over the past two years as well. While currently on tour with Wild Nothing, we’re excited to see if any new songs show themselves, however we’ll be happy with anything we get.

Wrapping it up though, please check out that link below to get listening, you’re going to love it!
