Review by Austin Sher

Following up her 2019 EP release, Volume 1, we are thrilled to announce that Awa Lemen is back with another record, Winter Feels. Please read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the album, in addition to a background on this blossoming independent artist.

Originally from Burkina Faso, this rising R&B star grew up in a small French city called Rouen. With music being an influence on her since a young age, she started writing music from the young age of 12 years old. Being an independent artist though, she quickly learned how to be self-sufficient in the sense of learning how to record and mix, especially on her first release, Self-Made (2018).

Inspired by artists such as Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Jhene Aiko and Banks, those talents flow right through her and get put out directly in her own personal sound. Following up 2019’s Volume 1, she’s been on the rise ever since she got a great deal of attention from the Toronto music scene. Having now listened to Awa’s entire discography released thus far, let it be known right now that we’ve very quickly become fans of everything she’s released.

On Winter Feels specifically, obviously it’s up for a discussion, but we think this could potentially be the best thing she’s put out so far. Not to discount her past works, but gaining experience in the industry, learning what your listeners want and so much more has led to an incredibly well produced and delivered EP from this artist.

For one, we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled on everything she puts out after this, but for now our full focuses are going to be enjoying this winter season while having Winter Feels on repeat. It’s not all the time that the title of a record can fit so well to the overall vibe and atmosphere, but Awa Lemen has certainly nailed that main aspect of it. With a vocal performance that is to die for, the inclusion of her signature sounds, and the warm feeling it invokes, we can confidently say that this release is a winner.

Our first impressions were really how wonderful of a listen this would be wrapped in some blankets on a cold night, but really, it could be listened to whenever in any setting. It’s multifaceted in the sense that it gives off the feelings of so many cumulative emotions and moods overall. Even if that’s not what the artist was going for, she certainly succeeded in doing so.

There really isn’t much else to say here besides we highly recommend you take the time out of your busy days to give this a listen! Kick off your holiday season with a spin.
