a_shes comes out strong on nostalgic debut single, "Movies & Music"
Kicking off his musical journey incredibly strong with a single called “Movies & Music”, you must check out a_shes’ debut. Please read on for our full review of the track, in addition to a background on this emerging artist.
Originally from Malaysian Borneo, but now residing in London specifically for University, it finally struck a_shes that now’s the perfect time to take advantage of life and start making music. Thankfully that decision was made because we’ve instantly fallen in love with his debut, “Movies & Music”. It aims to emulate the 2010’s “tumblr teen” nostalgic sound, however it still introduced so much originality in alternative electropop. Trust us, this is a song and artist you don’t want to miss out on.
Drawing inspiration from Lorde and Troye Sivan, so much of what we’ve enjoyed about this song is the literal decade spanning soundscapes he’s managed to infuse. As sonically prevalent as the whole thing is, you can’t help but make connections within the deep lyricism as well. On the background of the track, he says these are “‘coming of age' stories I never got to have, the fear of growing old, and how I wish I could go back in time to give myself a ‘history where I'm satisfied’, something many young people living through this pandemic are sure to relate with!”. We fully agree with that sentiment, because it doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re sure to have gone through something formative during these times.
Speaking on the production though, that’s where we really felt this song may have excelled the most. You’ve got those lo-fi aspects that deliberately come through within the vocals, but there’s a certain polished feeling from start to finish that still gives the song its edge. Nearing five minutes in runtime, the artist still gives more than enough leeway for the listener to really lose themselves within the music. Truly, you can’t ask for much more from a musician who’s basically just starting out. This is a wonderful performance overall and we sincerely can’t wait to see what else is on the way in the near future.
