Releasing officially in April 2022, we got the special opportunity to preview Antelope’s latest EP, You Were Always Now. Spoiler alert, it was beyond words fantastic! Please read on for a closer look at the record, in addition to a background on the band.

Currently made up of Vincent (vocals/guitar), Ethan (drums), and Steve (bass), Antelope are an indie-rock influenced band who have been creating with one another since 2019. After sharing their love of 80/s and 90’s behemoths like Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, the group set out to make something special for themselves that takes those inspirations and infuses a whole lot of themselves. Fast forward a few years and You Were Always Now is on the precipice of release. As mentioned, we’re loving this one a ton and can’t wait for everyone to dig in once release day comes.

Centering the EP around a post-punk production with plenty of other rock influences, what you’re going to experience are five powerful songs that each have their own attitude, yet to stay cohesive to the full album sound. What we mean by that is that You Were Always Now sounds definitively like an Antelope record, however they’ve experimented plenty to not sound one note. In our experience with modern day post-punk projects, there isn’t enough variation for our personal tastes, but this expertly breaks the mold and challenges the listener to really hone in on the instrumentals.

While each song definitely is its own little world of sound of atmosphere, our personal favorites of the five were the opener “The Company You Seek” and “Wolf At The Door”. With that being said though, the record is fully worthy of an interrupted full listen as to not miss out on the subtleties. If anything, they’ve set themselves up for a fruitful career considering there’s so many individual moments in these tracks we’d want to hear expanded on further singles or albums. In the meantime while we patiently wait for the follow up, our obvious recommendation is to crank this one up as loud as it’ll go and click that play button.
