Making a swift return on her third overall full-length album, Ana Carla Maza’s Bahia is sensational from start to finish. Please do yourselves a favor and read on for our full review, in addition to a background on this talented artist.

As a composer, vocalist, and cellist, Ana Carla Maza has put every ounce of her soul into her latest, Bahia. Released via Persona Editorial Records, what you’re about to experience is an eclectic mix of classical music that highlights her skills as both a cellist and dynamic singer. Recorded in Barcelona, and featuring a wide variety of genres throughout, this is certainly one of the more mature records that’s come our way as of recently, and we ultimately ended up loving every moment.

While you can tell just by listening how meaningful this record is to Ana, at its core it’s an ode to the district in Havana where she spent her childhood. As you listen, it’s like you’re making your way through her life and personal experiences. Coming in at 9 total tracks, spanning right around 33 minutes in length, there’s no doubt in our minds that you’ll be swept off your feet by the opener “La Habana” and whisked away as you get sucked into the atmosphere of it all. The record itself is sung in primarily Spanish, however please don’t let that deter you from feeling all of the intense emotions and passion that Bahia holds.

Currently on tour in Europe, we can’t possibly imagine how well this album translates in a live setting. The electricity that must be flowing through individual tracks like “Astor Piazzolla” and “Huayno” must be unreal, so here’s to hoping that Ana someday makes it out to Los Angeles so we can witness it in person. In the meantime we know that we’ll be doing a deep dive on her discography in order to fully familiarize ourselves as Bahia has been a repeated listen ever since it was initially sent our way. Through the endless interest in the instrumentation and of course Ana’s vocals that shine the brightest, it’s not a surprise that we can declare this one a winner, so get listening!
