Alba James creates elegance on stunning debut EP, "Bedroom Walls"

Transporting the listener into an ethereal realm of inspired instrumentation and incredibly rich production, Alba James has over delivered on her debut EP, Bedroom Walls. Entirely written and produced by herself, a massive feat in its own, she’s managed to bridge the gap between indie folk, orchestral pieces, and even glimmers of dream pop scattered throughout. On our initial listen, we instantly fell in love with everything coming across our ears, and are urging everyone out there to click the play button here as soon as possible.
On the background of the record, Alba is tackling important lyrical themes that cover “subjects of depression and derealization”. Taking inspiration from some of the best in the genre such as Laura Marling or Sufjan Stevens, it’s almost as if she’s taken a look through personal playlists and crafted a record that scratches all of our itches, seriously. The sheer beauty and elegance that Bedroom Walls holds is exactly what we’re always on the hunt for, and with that, we already know we’ll be making a return to this in the very near future. Now as for the music itself, at just six total songs, she’s introduced such a wide variety of instrumentation that it continuously keeps you guessing as to what’s going to come next. Her favorite instrument is the ukulele which makes itself present, but the shimmering strings and atmospheric arrangements give this such a complex edge in the end.
We could simply gloat all day long about how this record makes us feel, but it should also go without saying that her silky smooth and dynamic vocals are what provide a constant throughout it all. “Walls” was of course a major standout vocally, but another talking point is the cohesiveness from beginning to end. From the opening notes, she sets the mood and tone of what you’re going to expect and each track flows seamlessly from one to the other creating that ideal album experience that unfortunately feels like a lost art these days. Sincerely, we’ve only got positives to point out here and won’t spoil much else.
