Taking the time from his busy schedule, we got the incredible opportunity to speak with Trent Prall, who is much better known as Kainalu. He released one of our favorite records of 2022, Ginseng Hourglass, so please take the time to hear our full conversation with the artist below.

In the realm of psychedelic funk, there are few artists as captivating and innovative as Kainalu, the brainchild of independent multi-instrumentalist and producer Trent Prall. With his sophomore album, Ginseng Hourglass, Kainalu solidifies his position as a rising star, blending modern psychedelia with the timeless allure of classic Motown influences. Prall's Japanese-Hawaiian heritage, where "Kainalu" translates to the ebb and flow of ocean waves, provides a profound backdrop for the project's exploration of impermanence, life's transience, and the constant shifting of time.

From the opening notes of Ginseng Hourglass, it becomes apparent that Kainalu is not content with staying within the boundaries of conventional genres. Prall's intricate production and arrangement skills shine through as he seamlessly weaves together elements of psychedelia, funk, and soul, creating a sound that is simultaneously nostalgic and forward-thinking. Drawing from his love for Motown legends and contemporary psychedelic acts, Kainalu crafts a sonic tapestry that is both familiar and refreshingly original.

The album's core strength lies in its ability to transport listeners to ethereal realms through a carefully curated sonic journey. Tracks like "Queen of Wands," "Revelator," and "Inhibitions/Intuitions" envelop the senses with their dreamy atmospheres, lush instrumentation, and Prall's mesmerizing vocals. Each song feels like a kaleidoscopic exploration of sound, with layers upon layers of musical intricacies that unveil themselves with every listen.

What sets Kainalu apart is not just the music but also the accompanying visuals. Prall's attention to detail extends beyond the auditory experience, as he weaves his artistic vision into every aspect of the project. The album's artwork and imagery further enhance the immersive nature of the music, inviting listeners to dive deeper into the oceanic world that Kainalu creates.

While Ginseng Hourglass is undoubtedly a studio-driven endeavor, Kainalu's live interpretation of the music takes on a whole new dimension. With a talented lineup featuring guitarist Joe Waldbillig, bassist Evan Nelson, drummers Matthew Allen and Julian Russell, and conguero Aaron Gochberg, Prall expands the sonic palette of his recorded works and delves into more expansive and improvisational territories. This synergy between Prall and his bandmates elevates the live experience, adding a dynamic energy that breathes new life into the already captivating compositions.

He’s just about to head out on tour, so do yourselves a huge favor and check out those links below to stay in the loop. You can listen, watch, follow along, and of course stay tuned for so much more in the works.
