Ultra Music Festival’s ‘Mission: Home’ Program Leads the Way in Sustainability
Ultra Music Festival, a global beacon of electronic music, continues to harmonize its love for music with its dedication to environmental responsibility. This year, its award-winning sustainability program, Mission: Home, reached new heights, earning 1st Place in the Sustainability Program category at the 30th annual Florida Festivals and Events Association (FFEA) SUNsational Awards. This recognition, alongside other notable achievements, highlights the festival's innovative approach to reducing its environmental footprint.
Launched in 2019, Mission: Home has transformed how Ultra Music Festival approaches waste management and environmental stewardship. Its first program garnered a 100% acceptance rate for recycling loads at local facilities and reached over 2.7 million people globally. Over the years, Mission: Home has evolved, expanding from 20 initiatives in its inaugural year to an impressive 50 initiatives by 2024.
This dedication has yielded remarkable results, including diverting over 293,000 pounds of waste from landfills—a weight equivalent to a blue whale. By incorporating recycling, composting, and innovative waste diversion streams, Mission: Home has significantly reduced the festival's environmental impact.
At this year’s FFEA Convention & Expo, Mission: Home stood out among 500 submissions in 20 categories, securing its place as a leader in sustainability. This accolade is one of several honors the program has received, including the Sustainability Team Award at the 2023 World Sustainability Awards and recognition as a finalist for the Sustainability Excellence Award in 2024.
These achievements underscore Ultra Music Festival's broader mission to lead by example, proving that large-scale events can balance entertainment with environmental consciousness. This year, Mission: Home introduced a groundbreaking wood rescue and recycling program in partnership with Recreate Miami. By repurposing over 19,600 pounds of post-construction materials, the initiative gave these resources a second life, further diversifying Ultra’s waste diversion strategies. With this addition, the program now supports seven distinct waste diversion streams.
Additionally, the festival achieved a 50% waste diversion rate, a significant milestone reflecting its ongoing commitment to sustainability. This achievement exemplifies Ultra’s dedication to minimizing waste and maximizing resource recovery.
