Like always, Thundercat continues to put on some of the most memorable and hypnotizing shows in the entire world. Last night at Denver’s Mission Ballroom was no different, and in fact, immediately shot to the top of one of our all time favorites. Cycling through his greatest hits from Grammy-nominated album It Is What It Is, Drunk, and blowing people’s minds with his skills, there wasn’t an unaffected concert goer in the entire arena.

Kicking the night off and getting everyone into a great mood was the opener, Channel Tres, who set the bar high for the night. Delivering a memorable hybrid DJ and Hip Hop set, all fans new and old seemed to be having the time of their lives. If you weren’t dancing during his set, you weren’t living!

However as soon as Thundercat hit the stage, the demeanor of the Mission Ballroom immediately changed and everyone prepared themselves for an hour and a half of greatness. Opening things up with “Lost In Space”, mesmerizing every soul with “Innerstellar Love”, and then proceeding to put on a bass clinic with “I Love Louis Cole”, every fan immediately transported to a higher plane of existence. It doesn’t matter if you were 5 feet away from the stage or in the back row, you could palpably feel the love and emotion transporting through his fingers. The sheer talent and intensity he consistently delivers is second to none.

In between songs though, we got some great stage banter that covered deep topics such as his love for Mac Miller and Austin Peralta, and things as light as his minor hatred for Netflix’s live action Cowboy Bebop. Cutting through the tension of his songs with lightheartedness was needed, because between 10-15 minute instrumental solos, we thought everyone needed a breather, including Thundercat himself.

Beginning to wrap things up though, it should come as no surprise to anyone that our recommendation is if he comes to a city near you, this is a can’t miss show. Somehow he’s even better in a live setting than recorded, plus it gives everyone out there the utmost appreciation of his skillset in bass. It’s not often a bassist is the frontman, but paired with his charisma, we’re thrilled and excited to see him play for years down the line.
