“Who here is on their period” asks Slow Pulp guitarist and vocalist Emily Massey right before beginning Cramps, a crowd favorite from the indie rock band’s brand new album, Yard. As a 30 year old man, I can assure you that I was not on my period, but I was still able to relate heavily to the exclamatory lament of “I’ll take anything that you wanna give, but I want everything.”

This lyric is one of our favorites from the indie rock band’s third studio album which is full of similarly haunting, melancholy lyrics. Slow Pulp has a very identifiable sound that combines these beautifully sung melodies over heavy, almost grungy guitars and rhythm sections. Besides Cramps, Slow Pulp played a collection of new songs from Yard; some of our favorites included the heavier rock sounding MUD which had the audience head banging to the chorus, and Broadview which featured a steel guitar and a harmonica part.

 It was an eclectic collection of songs between brand new tracks and fan-favorite classics.  Slow Pulp sold out the Teragram Ballroom on Wednesday night on just one of their stops on this nationwide tour for Yard. If you are unfamiliar with the band, we highly recommend listening to this new album (as well as their old stuff, especially EP2), and catching them on tour when they come to a city near you.

They came, they saw, and they conquered through a massive and eclectic set in Los Angeles. If you ever get the opportunity to see them in a live setting, we wholeheartedly recommend you grab a ticket and make your way to the venue.
