Salami Rose Joe Louis Gets Experimental at OC's The Observatory
Setting the tone for the headliners of the night, HOMESHAKE, Salami Rose Joe Louis rolled into The Observatory in Orange County, California for an experimental and ultimately chilled out set of her greatest tunes. We were there up close and personal to recap the night, so please check out our full review and photo gallery below.
Having witnessed her set in the past back in 2018 when she opened for Toro y Moi, it’s safe to say we were quite excited to see how Salami Rose Joe Louis’ set had shifted and evolved over the years. Getting up there by herself, surrounded by loop pedals, synthesizers, and her always divine vocals, she single handedly ran the gambit of her discography throughout a 30 minute set. Treating the fans to tracks off of Chapters of Zdenka, Zdenka 2080, and a few oddities that we’re pretty sure were standalone singles, everyone in The Observatory was instantly enthralled once she hit the stage.
As the set progressed and things headed more on the experimental route, the more we felt that she opened up and let loose a bit. By far though, our standout moment of the night was her sci-fi-inspired song that left us hypnotized by swirling sounds, plenty of bleeps and bloops, but spearheaded directly by her voice that embodied something straight out of the 1940’s Jazz era. To put a label on her music as a whole would be an impossible task, but she always does an incredible job of bridging the gap between R&B, bedroom beats, glimmers of Jazz, and tons of pop. Currently signed to Brainfeeder, she’s the encapsulation of everything they’re doing right over there.
For something that felt so expansive and drawn out in the best way possible, her set flew by in what seemed like a matter of minutes. As her discography continues to grow, we’d love to see her in a headlining spot one of these days, because if we learned anything from last night’s show, it’s that she’s fully capable of captivating an audience. Seeing the reactions of concert goers around us, it turned from “who is this” to “I can’t wait to go home and get listening ASAP”.
