Getting out on the road after releasing 2021’s critically acclaimed record Going Going Gone, we were beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to see Mild High Club perform once again. Making their way to The Observatory in Southern California, it was an evening filled with psychedelic jams, a lively performance, and a stream of endless hits from one of our current favorite bands. Thankfully we were there front and center to recount the night, plus we’ve got a massive photo gallery to be checked out below.

Stepping on stage and immediately hearing the crowd go wild in anticipation, the band opened the night up with two tracks we’ve been waiting to hear the most, “Dionysian State” and “Kluges I”. They were definitely some of our favorites from Going Going Gone, however you quickly forget that they legitimately don’t release bad music. At the helm of Alex Brettin and an immensely talented band, they continued to rip through crowd favorites off of Timeline and Skiptracing that had all of us in a complete frenzy. We had the chance to see Mild High Club open for HOMESHAKE about 3-4 years ago, but it makes complete sense that they’re the headliners now given their growing fandom within the indie space.

So much of what we enjoyed about the show wasn’t necessarily the individual songs, but the technical prowess that the band holds as a unit. Seriously, they cut the small talk with the audience and it’s like they’re composing symphonies up there. A ton of Mild High Club’s music is rooted in Jazz, that should go without saying, but they leaned heavily into that with extended jams on particular songs like “Me Myself and Dollar Hell”, “Tesselation”, and even a slightly reggae-infused version of “Skiptracing”. You could tell each and every one of them was having the time of their lives being up there, and considering this current tour is limited in dates, you’d be a fool not to hit up a show if they’re nearby.

With all that being said though, the live show has grown to become something incredibly special as opposed to the last time we saw them. Looking at concert goers faces, you could tell the band had them all hypnotized from the start, and with great reason. For now though, if you’ve yet to listen to any of Mild High Club’s music, we suggest you spend your day down the rabbit hole of their expansive discography. A recommendation would be to start with their collaboration record called Sketches of Brunswick East that they put out in 2017 with King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.
