Kim Petras Serves Up All the Energy at LA's YouTube Theater
Grammy-winning artist Kim Petras brought the highly anticipated ‘Feed the Beast’ World tour to Los Angeles to start November off with a bang. In support of her debut full-length album, Problématique releasing earlier this year, her 34-date journey jump started in August and continues until the end of the month before it heads worldwide in 2024.
After the release of her number one hit featuring Sam Smith, “Unholy”, fans flocked to secure tickets, as they knew this pop-sensation’s show was a must-see. As this is her first time touring since 2020, the energy from her fans was felt before even stepping foot into the Youtube Theater.
‘Feed the Beast’ was nothing short of incredible. Fans were instantly shifted to a different reality as Petras’ emerges in a rocket-type ascending from the stage floor, revealing herself to be in a suit of armor, with lasers beaming behind her mask. As the backup dancers surrounding her begin removing each piece of metal, concert-goers screamed as she made her way around the stage. This pop-icon owned the space, including an equal mix of sex, comedy, horror, and pure passion for her 31-piece set, giving the audience more than they could ask for from the beginning (‘Feed the Beast) to end (an encore of ‘Heart to Break’).
Being not only the first openly transgender artist to have not only a no. 1 single, but a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (with Sam Smith) as well, Petras has more than proved herself to be a trailblazer in the industry, and I’m glad this tour was able to do her work justice. Every detail of the performance aided to the successful storytelling, and was absolutely impossible to look away from.
DJ Alex Chapman began the evening with an incredibly clubby pre-show set stacked with queer staple ‘going-out’ tracks. The nightlife staple himself didn’t stop dancing and interacting with the crowd until the moment his set ended, infusing the audience with his unmatched energy. It was impossible to not dance along as he played queer hits ranging from Britney Spears all the way to Azealia Banks. I can’t imagine a better opening act for the evening that was to come.
