If you didn’t get to witness Japanese Breakfast and Luna Li absolutely slay at Los Angeles’ Regent Theatre during their back to back sold out shows, we’re sorry, but you missed out big time! Check out our full review of the evening’s festivities below.

October 2nd and 3rd of 2021 will go down as one of the best nights in concert history, hands down. Japanese Breakfast and Luna Li brought their total A game to The Regent Theatre in Los Angeles where they ripped and roared through two incredibly memorable sets. While this was our introduction to Luna Li’s music as a whole, it certainly won’t be our last. A massive thank you in advance to Michelle Zauner and company for the introduction.

We happened to be present for the Saturday show and got there quite early just in case things got packed. As the night began and Luna Li played their memorable dreamy jams, it set the ideal stage and mood for what would be an all time show from Japanese Breakfast. The band got off stage, the crowd’s energy began to amplify, and before we knew it, the main set had started. Kicking things right off with the opening two tracks “Paprika” and “Be Sweet” off of their 2021 album Jubilee, we were quickly intoxicated with the stage show that we realized had much more production value than we ever could have dreamed of.

Taking the crowd through their growing discography with hits off Soft Sounds from Another Planet and even some gems off Psychopomp, this was one of the most well rounded set lists we’ve encountered. The real surprise of the night though was when Michelle let us in that she’d produced some music for a video game called “Sable”, then immediately went into the song “Glider”. In typical fashion, the band nailed every second of it and provided a nice breather from the rest of the night.

While the rest of the main set was wonderful, the real thrills came at the set closer, “Everybody Wants to Love You”. An unexpected confetti blast hit the crowd and the physical and emotional joy in that room could probably have been sensed from the entire city of Los Angeles. Considering concerts have just come back and we had been holding onto these tickets for months, that was the most fitting moment to close out the main set. Of course their finale was nothing to bat an eye at either, but we won’t spoil that for those who are still waiting for Japanese Breakfast to visit a city near them.
